Where is the starter relay located? ›

Most often, a true starter relay is a small black cube plugged into an electrical fuse/relay box in the engine compartment, whereas a starter solenoid is (in most cases) attached directly to the starter on the engine (although it is sometimes located elsewhere in the engine compartment).

The engine starter motor is located on front of the engine below the intake manifold. Remember that your car may have been serviced before and had parts replaced with different size fasteners used in the replacement.

Switch your multimeter to continuity mode, listen for the audible beep, and test for continuity between the switch pins. If there's no beep, it means the switch pins are stuck open and your relay is faulty.

You can try to jump-start your car while it has a bad starter, but there's no guarantee that it will work if the starter has failed completely or has a mechanical issue.
